Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Held at Newly Constructed Firehouse in Elizabeth

Elizabeth

Yesterday, city officials, fire officials and residents attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of the new Catherine Street Firehouse.

The newly reconstructed Catherine Street firehouse includes upgrades, additions and enhancements that were made to improve firefighter response.

The two story structure includes a basement (designed to be LEED-certified), it has the capacity to store three pieces of apparatus and an ambulance within its bays, and it contains facilities for both men and women.

Engine #6 and EMS #6 will be stationed at this station, officials added.

In addition to increasing in efficiency and effectiveness, this initiative was designed to incorporate environmentally conscious and cost-saving products to support a greener tomorrow.

The building contains energy efficient systems and fixtures such as: HVAC and LED lighting as well as faucets, sinks and windows, which will conserve resources and reduce expenses.

There are also on-site washers and dryers to keep Turnout gear clean, in proper working condition and ready for the next call. This feature eliminates time spent traveling to other firehouses to maintain personal protective uniforms as well as increases first responder health along with their ability to respond to events successfully.

The incorporation of bi- fold doors to the bay area provide more room for fire trucks and specialized apparatus.

Furthermore, to ensure that the firehouse has the capability to remain operational in the event of power loss, a back-up generator has also been installed.

As part of the grand opening, attendees were invited to take a tour of the new facility.
