Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which a Newark police officer was struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning.

Authorities said at approximately 3:40 a.m. the Newark officer was at the intersection of Foundry Street and Roanoke Street attempting to issue a motor vehicle summons to a car when he was struck by that vehicle.

The vehicle then fled from the area authorities said.

The officer, who is 37 years old and a 14 year veteran was rushed to University Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Major Crimes Unit, who added that the officer is currently in stable condition.

The identity of the officer is being withheld for security reasons authorities said.

This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
