IRONBOUND RESIDENT CHOSEN AS STUDENT OF THE YEAR

15-year-old Newark Ironbound resident Melanie Oliveira was named this year's "Student of the Year" by the Salvation Army/Boys and Girls Club of the Ironbound.

A spokesperson for the organization said The Boys and Girls Club of America, is a  premier recognition program for club members. The organization honor students that promote service to club, community, and their families.

Oliveira was chosen because of her academic success, strong moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability the spokesperson said.

All local clubs recognize members ages 14-18 as youth of the year, who then participate in state competitions. State winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship and participate in regional competitions the spokesperson said.

Five regional winners will then each receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete on the national level.

The national youth of the year receives an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the President.
