Wrong-Way Driving Suspected in Deadly I-80 Crash in Passaic County

New Jersey State Police officials are investigating a deadly crash that left at least two people dead following an early-morning collision on Interstate 80 in Passaic County.

According to preliminary information released by New Jersey State Police, troopers and emergency crews were dispatched just before 2:15 a.m. to the westbound lanes of I-80 near mile marker 54.2 in Totowa for reports of a serious crash with injuries. 

Responding units arrived to find a devastating scene involving two vehicles, including one car with multiple trapped occupants — among them a young child.

Rescue crews worked to free those inside the vehicle. 

The New Jersey Regional Medical Examiner’s Office was requested to respond to the scene as part of the investigation. 

A portion of the highway was shut down while authorities worked the incident.

 

Investigators are reviewing whether one of the vehicles may have been traveling in the wrong direction prior to the collision. 

The cause of the crash remains under active investigation, and additional details, including the identities of the victims, have not yet been released.

New Jersey State Police continue to investigate and are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
