MAYS LANDING- An Egg Harbor Township woman is charged in connection to a fatal motor vehicle collision on February 26, that killed a mother and her infant son, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.
According to Atlantic County officials, on Tuesday, Nancy Cavanaugh, 66, was charged with two counts of Aggravated Manslaughter in connection with a fatal motor vehicle collision occurring on February 26, 2019, on English Creek Avenue in Egg Harbor Township.
“This was a senseless tragic loss of a young mother and infant son, which could have easily been avoided.
There are too many examples of these tragedies that have cost us too many loved ones and friends by people who engage in reckless and irresponsible conduct by weaponizing their vehicles when they are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” said Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner.
The investigation revealed that Cavanaugh was the driver of a vehicle that left its lane of travel and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Alisha Williams, 31, of Somers Point.
Police say both Williams and her 10-month-old son, (initials) A.C., also of Somers Point, were killed in the crash.
The investigation further concluded that Cavanaugh was driving in excess of the speed limit while under the influence of multiple intoxicating substances, including alcohol and alprazolam when her car left its lane of travel, causing the crash.
Cavanaugh is lodged at the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending a detention hearing tentatively scheduled for Monday, October 21, 2019. Assistant Prosecutor Rick McKelvey represents the state in the matter.
This investigation is a cooperative effort between the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Investigations Unit and the Egg Harbor Township Police Department.
