Newark

Officials at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office assisted in a pedestrian strike with a woman severely injured in Newark's Central Ward on Sunday evening.

It happened around 8:35 p.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and South 9th Street.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene after receiving several 911 calls reporting a person injured.

According to officials, Newark Firefighters found the victim trapped under the car and used several rescue techniques to extricate the woman.

Police say the unidentified victim was rushed to University Hospital for treatment and was then listed in a life-threatening condition.

Witnesses at the scene said they observed two vehicles speed away from the location immediately after the woman was struck, but police have not confirmed a hit and run in the incident.
