Woman Injured in Two-Car Crash in Newark

Newark

A woman suffered non-fatal injuries in a Newark Central Ward car crash Thursday afternoon.

According to a preliminary investigation, the violent collision happened around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Court and Shipman Streets.  Crash

Emergency responders raced to the scene and found two severely damaged vehicles crashed on a sidewalk of a housing complex near Martin Luther King Boulevard.

A male driver of one of the cars was able to be extricated, while a female was trapped inside the other vehicle.

Residents in the area said the intersection is dangerous.

"When school dismisses, the situation becomes worse because the small street receives cars blocking the intersection's path, allowing a left-turn outlet onto Court Street," a resident on the Court Street side of the complex said.

Rescue crews were able to get the woman from the vehicle, then EMS transported her to University Hospital for treatment.  Crash

"Just an hour later, this could have been a disaster because there are about five schools that dismiss, and the kids that walk home could have been struck and seriously injured on the sidewalk," the woman said.

The cause of Thursday's crash is under investigation.
