William Paterson University Sued After Student Commits Suicide After Neglected Rape Investigation

Paterson

Almost a year after a William Paterson University student committed suicide on campus, her mother has file a lawsuit against the school claiming her daughter committed suicide after school officials neglected to fully investigate her daughter's rape allegations.

According to a lawsuit filed by Marquesa C. Jackson-Locklear, mother of 21-year-old Cherelle Jovanna Locklear, on or about Sept. 25, 2015, her daughter was raped at the William Paterson University Sigma Pi Fraternity house.

Although assault was not immediately reported, following an initial attempt by Locklear to kill herself by overdosing on pills, she subsequently informed Theresa A. Bivaletz, coordinator of William Paterson's Victim Services, of the alleged rape.

According to the suit, the lawsuit states the rape was not reported to campus police until November 2015.

Adding that campus police Detectives Ellen DeSimone and Michael John Arp were aware of the sex assault and Locklear's suicide attempt but allegedly collectively failed to act as required by law to investigate the assault.

The University has not issued any comments on the lawsuit.
