A Wife's Tips For A Resistant Husband When Building Business

By O.L./ Sway Buckley

When we got married, we were spousal-preneurs.

That's the marriedpreneur type where one spouse builds the business while the other spouse supports and works a 9-5 job.

I started my entrepreneurial journey at the tender age of 16; then, at 19 years old, I built a staffing firm on my dorm room floor to pay for college. That business took me well into my 30s when I got married. By that time, I had operated three businesses on full-time bases. I didn't have the privilege of experiencing a corporate job.

So, when my husband left his banking and wealth management job and started his firm, he gave lots of pushback when I suggested we meet regularly; what I didn't realize (because of my inexperience in corporate) was that 'meetings' were a trigger word for him. I was unaware he loathed having meetings because of his horrible past experiences. ❌

For me, however, I knew we needed to have a system of communication that kept us updated on each other's progress. If I can be totally transparent, we like to feel secure as women, and these updates offered that for me.

But it started off pulling teeth.

Success-Mapping Call

So, I had to pray for wisdom, the best way to share my needs. It started with me asking what he needed the legacy meetings to look/feel like to excite him.

He was clear about what he didn't want, so we adjusted accordingly (i.e., 10-15 min, to the point and encouraging).

As I listened to his needs, he began to see how small changes brought significant results through our consistency and conversations. It wasn't long before his attitude changed, and he beat me to our daily meeting spot. He was running the same legacy meetings that he once despised.

I say all of this today, be encouraged if your husband is giving you pushback. Consider learning the root of his emotions and respond in wisdom.

Today's legacy meetings have been a game changer for our marriage and business. Listen to the Marriedpreneur Life podcast to hear more strategic steps I took to get to this point.
