Weapon Recovered From Attempted Armed Robbery Suspect in Newark

Multiple police units combed through a Newark North Ward community searching for a man who they said was responsible for an attempted gunpoint robbery of a person at a bus stop in the city's North Ward last night.

Cops receiving calls of an attempted armed robbery that happened at around 9 p.m. in the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Broadway hurried to the scene where they came in contact with the victim who reported to them that a male suspect who was armed with a gun attempted to take personal possessions.

First police units approaching the scene spotted the suspect that they believed fit the description of the reported armed robbery suspect and radioed the description in to headquarters after they lost visual contact of the suspect.

More than a half dozen units canvassed the area where they spotted the suspect near a school in the 40's block of Crittiden Street a short time later.

In an attempt to make a quick getaway, the suspect began to run away from police when back up officers boxed the man in, eventually taking him in custody at gunpoint.

A weapon that is believed to have been used in the attempted armed robbery was recovered from the suspect.

There were no physical injuries reported.
