Water Search Underway for Alleged Purse Snatcher who Jumped into the Passaic River in Newark

There is an active search underway for a suspect who reportedly jumped into the Passaic River after committing a theft overnight in the Ironbound section of Newark.

According to preliminary reports, police were called to the vicinity of McCarter Highway at Lombardy Street to investigate a report of a theft in progress at approximately 12:50 a.m.

Upon arrival, Newark Police notified Kearny, Harrison, and The NJ State Police Marine unit after they were told that a male suspect, who reportedly snatched the victim's pocketbook, jumped into the river in an attempt to flee.

Police searched a significant portion of the river using thermal imaging and rescue boats from Kearny to Newark but as of 2:30 a.m., the person was not found.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
