Residents in Newark’s West Ward were startled Wednesday after a major water main break produced a loud boom that some initially feared was an explosion.
The incident occurred near South 6th Street and 11th Avenue, where residents reported hearing the powerful sound from several blocks away.
Concerned neighbors immediately called 911 before water began violently shooting from the ground, creating what witnesses described as a geyser-like scene in the neighborhood.
According to an alert released by the City of Newark, a 36-inch water main broke at the intersection, prompting an emergency response from Newark Water & Sewer crews.
City officials warned that residents and businesses in the surrounding area could experience low water pressure, discolored water, or a complete loss of water service while repairs are underway.
Street closures and traffic delays were also reported around the affected area as crews worked to repair the damaged main.
Newark officials said Water & Sewer crews were working diligently to restore service and complete repairs.
