Members of the U.S. Marshals Service District of New Jersey and the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force safely apprehended a wanted fugitive Thursday after she allegedly wrapped an extension cord around her neck and threatened to jump from a fourth-floor fire escape during an arrest operation in East Orange.
Authorities said Tamara Rankin, 39, had been wanted by the East Orange Police Department since April 2026 on aggravated assault and weapons charges.
According to officials, Deputy U.S. Marshals and task force officers, working alongside East Orange police, located Rankin at an apartment complex on Oraton Parkway while attempting to execute an outstanding arrest warrant.
Investigators said as officers knocked on the apartment door, Rankin fled toward an exterior fire escape and climbed several stories above the ground.
During the incident, Rankin appeared emotionally distressed and threatened to jump, prompting deputies and task force officers to immediately transition from enforcement efforts to crisis intervention measures while emergency responders were called to the scene.
After an intense standoff that lasted nearly two hours, a Deputy U.S. Marshal and task force officer were able to move close enough to safely secure Rankin and pull her to safety before turning her over to emergency medical personnel.

“No arrest is more important than a human life,” said Nicholas Ricigliano, Acting U.S. Marshal for the District of New Jersey.
“The professionalism and restraint shown by the deputies and responding officers helped bring a dangerous and emotional situation to a safe conclusion.”
