Violent Muggings in Newark's East Ward Under Investigation

A violent mugging of a woman that happened in the city's Ironbound section has police searching for the suspect that they believe committed several other robberies around the city.

The attack happened at around noon today near the Seabra's Supermarket on Alyea Street where a woman was walking in the area and was approached from behind by an unidentified black male suspect who pushed her to the ground and began to attack her according to eyewitnesses.

The man reportedly struck the woman in the head and snatched her pocketbook which contained cash and personal possessions before he fled the scene in a grey/silver colored vehicle eyewitnesses said.

The woman was taken to an area police precinct where she spoke to police then she was transported to the hospital suffering a head injury.

Police are looking into another strong armed robbery that occured Friday evening at around 7:30 p.m. on Kormon Street where cops were called to the scene for a robbery at that location.

According to reports, a female victim was physically attacked, then robbed of a wallet and cell phone. The suspect reportedly dropped the woman's purse while he was en route to a grey or silver vehicle that he fled the area in.

Police issued an alert early this afternoon for a grey or silver vehicle that is responsible for committing several robberies in the East and North Wards.

There have been no arrests immediately reported.
