VIDEO UPDATE: Woman Jumps From Burning Building in Newark’s West Ward

Newark police officials reported that Newark Firefighters extinguished a 2-alarm fire at 767 South Orange Avenue Friday. 

According to officials,  at around  4:35 p.m., firefighters responded  on a call of a fire at a 2 1/2 unit unoccupied and abandoned police station building.   

Upon arrival, crews found flames engulfing the entire structure and immediately stretched multiple lines. 

Officials said a 2nd alarm was immediately called when intense flames began to extend to 765 South Orange Avenue. 

Video from the scene showed an adult female jumping from the building’s second floor.

Police said the injured woman was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.   

Police reported no other injuries. 

The fire was considered under control at 5:56 p.m., with the cause and origin of this fire is under investigation by the Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.

 

Residents in that section of Vailsburg said squatters and homeless individuals occupied the building for quite some time.
