Police in Elizabeth are searching for a suspect following a violent carjacking that occurred Thursday night at a Sonic fast food restaurant along Route 1&9.
According to a preliminary investigation, officials with the Elizabeth Police Department said the victim exited his vehicle and entered the restaurant to pick up food.
When he returned, he observed an unknown male attempting to steal his vehicle.
Police said the victim opened the driver’s door, at which point the suspect pushed him out of the vehicle.
As the suspect fled the scene, the victim was run over by his own car.
The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment.
Authorities said the suspect remains at large. The investigation is ongoing.
