UPDATE: Victim Identified in Fatal Newark Hit-and-Run

Essex County officials announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating a fatal hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of Mohammed Sani Razaku, 25, of Newark.

According to county officials, on Monday, January 10, at approximately 12:04 a.m. Razaku, who was driving a motorized scooter on McCarter Highway between Market Street & Raymond Boulevard in Newark, was struck and killed by the driver of a Volkswagen GTI.  

Officials said that he was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:41 a.m. on January 10. 

Both the driver of the Volkswagen and his passenger sustained eye injuries caused by damage to the vehicle, which included a broken windshield.

According to officials, the driver of the Volkswagen attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by Newark Police officers. 

County officials said that he was issued multiple summonses by the city of Newark for careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, but the criminal crash investigation is ongoing.
