Authorities are investigating an early morning vehicle explosion that damaged several homes in a Totowa neighborhood Monday.
According to information released by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on July 13 in the Hickory Hill development on Congressional Lane after Totowa police received a 911 call reporting a vehicle explosion.
When officers arrived, they found a vehicle that had sustained extensive damage from the blast.
Officials said a 28-year-old man who was inside the vehicle at the time of the explosion was able to escape on his own before being transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and observation.
The explosion also caused damage to several nearby residences, but no other injuries were reported.
Because of the nature of the incident, the Totowa Police Department requested assistance from the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Investigators conducting a preliminary investigation determined the explosion was likely caused by a leaking acetylene cylinder stored in the trunk of the vehicle.
Authorities said there is no indication of foul play, and there is no known threat to the public.
The investigation remains active.
