The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation in a shooting that left a male victim dead in Newark's Central Ward.
According to a preliminary investigation, police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of West Kinney and Halsey streets around 7:30 p.m.
First arriving Newark Police officers arrived at the scene found a male victim suffering severe injuries from bullet wounds in close proximity to a newly constructed building.
While police and detectives investigated at the scene, officials at University Hospital notified police that a male gunshot victim entered the emergency room suffering bullet wounds.
Essex County authorities said one of the victims died shortly after the shooting.
The motive for the attack is under investigation and no arrests have been reported.
