UPDATE: Tip Leads to Arrest of Newark Bank Robbery Suspect

Police in Newark report the arrest of Mr. Esau Grant, 27, of Newark, in connection with a bank robbery on Saturday, July 3, 2021.

According to police, the suspect, Grant, wrote a note on a withdrawal slip and handed the note to the teller. It read, “I have a gun give me all the money from the register please, and no one will get hurt.”

The teller gave him money including a dye pack.

Grant left the bank, walking east on Springfield Avenue. When he walked beyond the bank property, the dye pack exploded. He then ran north on Blum Street.

The total amount of cash stolen, along with the dye pack, was $2,500. The dye pack contained $200. The final count of the cash stolen was $2,300. 

Police said that Grant was arrested today after he was observed by Detective Graham while in the area of Broad Street and Prudential Drive.

He faces charges of robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

These charges are merely accusations.

This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
