UPDATE: Teen Wearing Monitoring Ankle Bracelet Arrested for Newark Ironbound Car Theft, Kidnapping

Newark

Police officials in Newark are reporting the arrest of a 16-year-old Newark male for a car theft that occurred yesterday.

According to police, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a woman’s vehicle, a Ford 150, was stolen by a male suspect on Darcy Street near Magazine Street.

Police said a 7-year-old child was inside the car when it was stolen but was released, uninjured, a short distance away, at Ferry and St. Charles streets.

Fast responding 4th Precinct officers quickly located the stolen vehicle, which collided with several parked cars, as well as a Jeep Cherokee, at Schley Street near the intersection of Chancellor Avenue.

Police observed the suspect fleeing from the vehicle when they gave chase and quickly apprehended the teen then charged him with Eluding, Assault by Eluding, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Kidnapping, Theft and Criminal Restraint.

Police said the suspect is a known repeat offender who wore a monitoring bracelet at the time of this arrest.

"This continuing trend is resulting in an increase in crime where Newark Police are routinely arresting suspects who have been released because of bail reform and resume their criminal activities upon being released, often while wearing a monitoring bracelet" Director Ambrose said.
