UPDATE: Swift Newark Police Response Leads to Arrest of Newark Fatal Shooting Suspect; Montclair Resident

Newark -- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced today that the victim of today’s homicide in the 200 block of Clifton Avenue has been identified as James Goff, 22, of Irvington.

Authorities said Brandon Williams, 22, of Montclair has been charged and arrested for the murder of Goff.

According to authorities, shortly after the shooting, Williams was detained by Newark Police Department; and after further investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, Williams was charged with Murder, Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose.

Williams’ bail has been set at $750,000, with no 10 percent by Essex County Superior Court Judge Marcella Wilson.

His is currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.

Prosecutor Murray stated, “Thanks to the quick response of the Newark Police Department and investigation by the Homicide Task Force, an arrest was made today.”

These are accusations.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
