UPDATE: Surveillance Video Shows Bicyclist Crossing in Front of Car Before Deadly Newark Collision

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has identified a 69-year-old Newark man who died after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in the city’s South Ward Saturday afternoon.

According to information released by authorities, Newark Police responded to the intersection of Frelinghuysen Avenue and Haynes Avenue at approximately 12:52 p.m. on October 10, following reports of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle.

 

Investigators said surveillance footage showed a vehicle traveling northbound in the left lane of Frelinghuysen Avenue when a bicyclist crossed into its path and was struck.

 

The driver immediately exited the vehicle and remained at the scene, authorities said.

 

The victim, identified as Joseph A. Vasquez, 69, of Newark, was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m.
 

Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under active investigation.
