Update: Stray Bullet From Police-Involved Shooting Injures Child Inside Asbury Park Home

A police involved shooting left a 20-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl injured after a gunfire exchange with an Asbury Park police officer last night.

Sometime around 7:19 p.m., Asbury Park police approached a man at the corner of Atkins and Springwood avenues.

During the search the officer felt a handgun on the 20-year-old male who immediately after fled west on Springwood. As the officer went after him, the armed male fired at the officer and the officer returned fire.

Among the two injured in the exchange was the armed male and an 8-year-old girl who was grazed by a bullet inside her home as she watched television.

According to officials, the child was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was later released.

The unidentified male remains in the hospital with also non life-threatening injuries.

After an area search of the scene, led authorities to a Smith and Wesson semi-automatic 9 mm handgun.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the shooting.
