UPDATE: Stray Bullet from Drive-by Shooter Kills NJ Division of Child Protection Worker

Mercer County authorities have announced that a New Jersey state employee was shot and killed in front of her home in Trenton Friday evening.

Officials said Ms. Vernetta McCray was gunned down in front of her home in the 100 block of Hampton Avenue.

A longtime employee of the department of children and families, McCray, 39, died.

A spokesperson with the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said Trenton police responded to the area of the 300 block after receiving a Shot Spotter activation for more than 20 rounds fired.

According to Trenton’s Mayor, McCray was on the porch speaking to a client and assisting with a family issue involving the client.

McCray was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but did not survive Mercer County authorities said.

The suspects sped from the scene and remain at-large.
