The search for a missing 10-year-old girl in the Passaic River came to a heartbreaking end Friday evening after first responders recovered her body near Veterans Court in Passaic, according to emergency radio traffic and city officials.
The girl had been missing since Wednesday when three children reportedly entered the river near a city park.
A 10-year-old boy was recovered from the water on Wednesday after he reportedly sacrificed his own safety to help save his younger sister, who managed to make it to shore.
Passaic Mayor Hector Lora confirmed to NJ.com that first responders located the girl’s body Friday evening following an extensive multi-day search involving numerous local, county, and state emergency agencies.
Reports indicated that the victim was initially spotted by a civilian who called 9-1-1.
Passaic Police officers quickly confirmed the sighting, prompting a large emergency response. Mutual aid units were requested to assist, while a heavy police presence was established to manage traffic and growing crowds.
Earlier radio transmissions reported the victim had been located near the Market Street Bridge before recovery efforts shifted downstream.
The tragedy has deeply affected the Passaic community, where residents have gathered throughout the week hoping for a different outcome.
The incident has also highlighted the dangers of swift-moving river currents, particularly following recent heavy rainfall across North Jersey.
