UPDATE: Search Continues for Suspect who Murdered Man on Street in Newark

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office are continuing to investigate a shooting that fatally wounded a man on a street in Newark in December.

According to Essex County authorities, the fatal shooting was the official homicide in Newark occurring on December 30th.

Police say they responded to a ShotSpotter activation that rang out in the area of Boyd and Livingston Street at 7:53 p.m.

Newark Police officials said in a report that officers were about a block away near the 1st Precinct when they swiftly responded to investigate.

Upon arrival, police say an unidentified person standing near the intersection pointed officers in the direction of an injured victim lying on the ground at that location.

According to police, they began to provide some medical assistance for Mr. Jamal D. Mitchell, 39, after they found him fighting for his life. Police say a gunman fired multiple shots that struck him in the chest.

Police say Mitchell was rushed to University Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 8:24 p.m.

Authorities secured the area as detectives for The Essex County Prosecutor's Office arrived and took over the investigation.
