UPDATE: Police Pursuit Originated in Montclair, Ends in Double Fatal Crash in Glen Ridge

Glen Ridge

The NJ State Attorney General’s Office has taken over the investigation into a fatal crash that killed two individuals in Essex County on Tuesday morning.

The collision happened when the vehicle being chased eastbound on Bloomfield Avenue from Montclair crashed at the intersection of Ridgewood Avenue in Glen Ridge before 5 a.m.

The impact of the collision had the fleeing vehicle leave the roadway and enter into an embankment, then slam into a tree.

At least two victims were killed instantly. Officials would not immediately confirm if any other victims died in the crash.

Former Attorney General Gurbir Grewal ordered the restriction on police pursuits in 2020 as part of a sweeping reform of the policies that govern when and how police can use force.

Grewal's policy allowed officers to pursue people suspected of 12 crimes, including murder, kidnapping, burglary, and escape.

At the beginning of May 2022, after listening to various township leaders, Acting Attorney General Matt Platkin reversed that decision, allowing police officers across the state to now pursue car thieves.

NJ State AG Officials have not released circumstances involving this chase.

The collision is under investigation.
