UPDATE: Police Identify Man who Attempted to Carjack Woman in Newark's Ironbound

Newark

Police arrested Mr. Troy Frye, 51, of Newark, in connection with a carjacking and an alleged commercial robbery that occurred on Thursday, October 4th and a second commercial robbery that happened Tuesday.

Police say at approximately 1 p.m. yesterday, officers responded to a call of a carjacking in the 100-block of Richards Street where the victim was approached by a male who attempted to take her car.

Police say civilians intervened and held the suspect until responding officers took Frye into custody.

Just before the carjacking, police say the same man entered the Payless Shoe Source on Ferry Street and assaulted the worker before attempting to steal the cash register then fled the scene.

According to police, on October 4th, at 11:45 a.m., a male entered a business, also in the 200-block of Ferry Street, and forced a worker to open the register. The suspect stole the store’s cash before fleeing the location.

Robbery detectives investigating these incidents developed evidence identifying Frye as the suspect in both robberies then charged him with carjacking and two counts of robbery.

“The quick actions of the civilians at the scene resulted in the arrest of this suspect,” said Director Ambrose. “This incident confirms that our that our work in strengthening police-community relations is going in a positive direction.”
