UPDATE: Police Identify Man Fatally Shot in Newark

Newark --- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes Newark Police detectives, is investigating a fatal shooting.

According to police, last night at approximately 9:30 p.m., Newark Police responded to a 911 call of a shooting in the vicinity of 34 Evergreen.

When they arrived, they discovered Mr. Shakeem Bernard, 27, of Newark with a gunshot wound.

EMS rushed Bernard to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said officers located a suspected vehicle fleeing the scene which prompted a pursuit then crash in the 200 block of Frelinghuysen Ave.

One of the occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle that ignited in flames before they were removed from the car.

Police said no one sustained serious injuries and two suspects are currently in custody.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
