Under a 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), the Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with law enforcement acting in an official capacity or while a person is in custody.

The statute also mandates that all such cases be presented to a grand jury to determine whether the evidence supports criminal charges against the officer or officers involved.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and no additional information is being released at this stage.
