UPDATE: Police Arrest Man Wanted for Stabbing Kean University Honor Student to Death in Montclair

Authorities arrested Mr. Ahighah Broomes, 21, of Orange, then charged him murdering of Ms. Akirah Townes, also of Orange on Friday morning.

According to The Essex County Prosecutors's Office, Townes was stabbed outside a home on Hartley Street at around 6 a.m.

EMS rushed Townes to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, where doctors pronounced her dead at 6:42 a.m.

Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly said it appears that Broomes and Townes were in a relationship at some point in the past.

Chief Fennelly said during a search of Broome's house, he turned himself in at the Orange Police Headquarters.

Authorities charged Broomes with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Fennelly said.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
