UPDATE: One Dead in Early Morning Rear-End Collision on Route 21 in Newark

A Clifton man was killed Thursday morning when his vehicle collided with a box truck on Route 21 South, according to information released by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., Newark Police notified the County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Bureau of the crash at mile marker 5.8. 

 

Investigators learned that a silver 2004 Ford Focus, driven by 55-year-old Ronald Benedetto Jr., struck the rear of a Hino box truck.

 

Emergency responders transported Benedetto to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 11:00 a.m. 

 

The box truck operator remained at the scene and reported that there were no injuries.

 

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the collision remains under active investigation, and no further details have been released.
