Update: Newark Woman Strikes, Kills Jersey City Man on Interstate 80 in Rockaway

Authorities have released the identities of the Newark, Jersey City drivers involved in the fiery crash on Route 80 Tuesday.

According to police, Michael O'Brien, 49, of Jersey City was adjusting his bicycle on his vehicle on the shoulder of Route 80 west near Exit 35 when he was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by Barbara Potts, 72, of Newark.

Shortly after the crash, both vehicles engulfed in flames.

A passerby - identified as Duncan Smythe, 55, of Westfield - reportedly saw vehicles and was able to get Potts out of the vehicle and also assist a conscious passenger out.

Potts and a front-seat passenger had minor injuries.

However a rear-seat passenger, later identified as Mary Briggs, 69, of Newark, was critically injured in the crash and transported to Morristown Medical Center.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
