UPDATE: Newark Woman Arrested in Pedestrian Strike That Killed Jersey City Man

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that a person has been arrested in connection with the fatal hit and run of a pedestrian in Newark.

According to authorities, on April 9, 2016 at approximately 6:40 a.m., Mahmoud M. Baza, age 31, of Jersey City, was killed while he crossing Mulberry Street at the intersection of Market Street.

Authorities said the vehicle that struck Baza fled from the scene and was subsequently located a few blocks away.

An investigation by detectives from the Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, has led to charges against a twenty-four year old Newark resident in connection with Baza’s death, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.

Authorities identified Shawniece Strothers and has been charged her with one count of Aggravated Manslaughter and one count of Death by Auto.

Strothers was arrested at her residence on April 14, 2016 by detectives from the Prosecutor’s Office.

Bail has been set at $350,000 by the Honorable John I. Gizzo, J.S.C. Strothers has been lodged in the Essex County Correctional Facility according to Fennelly.
