The Union County Prosector’s Office has taken the lead in a fatal shooting investigation in Elizabeth.
According to a preliminary investigation, shortly before 4:10 p.m., Trinitas Hospital officials notified Elizabeth Police when a severely injured male was transported to the emergency room -by a civilian- suffering multiple bullet wounds.
The individual was pronounced dead by medical personnel a short time later.
RLS Media has learned that the victim, Mr. Carmelo Rodriguez, 29, of Newark, was shot in Mary and Walnut streets before arriving at the hospital.
Elizabeth Police arrived at the scene and found evidence that a shooting had occurred, but no other victims were located.
The gunman fled the scene and has not been captured at this time.
This is the second deadly shooting in Elizabeth since the start of 2023, where the city was the first municipality in NJ to record a homicide just after midnight on new year’s day.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
