UPDATE: Newark Police Updates 31-Hour South Ward Standoff

A standoff that lasted 31 hours has now ended with police forcing entry into the apartment at 34 Clinton Place in Newark just before 12:55 p.m.   

The suspect suffered non-lethal bullet and taser injuries and is being  transported by EMS to the hospital at this time.   

In the incident, The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said, out of an abundance of caution, some area residents were asked to evacuate their homes near 34 Clinton Place after the suspect reportedly fired shots at law enforcement around 6 a.m. Thursday.  

 The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office were executing a warrant of the suspect just before the standoff and shots fired. 

According to county officials, when law enforcement entered the multi-family structure, some residents were detained for identification and subsequently released. 

Police said through the day, the suspect reportedly fired several rounds inside the residence while keeping officers at bay.

No officers were injured in the standoff.
