UPDATE: Newark Police Officer Injured While Arresting Robbery Suspect

A police officer sustained an injury during the arrest of Hanife D. McCall, 24, of Newark, a robbery suspect who had fired a weapon during the robbery, which occurred tonight.

Police said just before 7:30 p.m., an officer responded to 39 Bryant Street on a call of shots fired and a robbery in progress.

Upon arriving on scene, the officer observed civilians fighting with a suspect.

While attempting to handcuff the struggling suspect the officer injured his knee.

The weapon was also recovered at the scene.

The officer was treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries prior to being released.

The suspect, McCall, reported no injuries.

McCall is expected to be charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Aggravated Assault Against a Police Officer, Robbery, and Resisting Arrest.

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
