UPDATE: Newark Officer Bit During Arrest After Dirt Bike Crash Leaves Rider Critically Injured

Police in Newark are investigating a violent incident that followed a crash involving a dirt bike and a vehicle Monday night.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr., the collision occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. on April 27, 2026, near Avon Avenue and South 18th Street.

 

Responding officers found the injured dirt bike operator and began rendering aid when an unidentified male intervened and began assaulting officers. Authorities said the suspect pushed, kicked, and spat at officers during the confrontation.

 

One officer was transported to University Hospital after being bitten on the finger by the suspect.

 

The male suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

 

The dirt bike driver was also transported to University Hospital and is reported to be in critical but stable condition.

The incident remains under active investigation.
