UPDATE: Newark Man Succumbs To Injuries From North Ward Hit-and-Run Crash in September

Newark

The family of a man who was involved in a late September car crash in Newark's North Ward are reporting his death.

According to a preliminary investigation, on Friday, September 25, at approximately 7 a.m., Newark North Ward Police received a call reporting a crash near the intersection of Mount Prospect and 3rd avenues.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a severely damaged, black 2007 Honda Civic with a trapped and injured male inside. Police said a second vehicle that was also involved in the crash was unoccupied during their search of the car.

Police say the victim was identified as Mr. Jeremy Silva, 33, of Newark, who was transported to University Hospital for treatment and listed in critical condition.

Silva's family told RLS Media that after fighting for his life for several weeks, he died Monday, October 12, from his injuries.

According to the police report, a witness told police, the driver who fled the scene was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Mount Prospect Avenue when he attempted an illegal u-turn to go southbound, causing the violent crash.

The witness said immediately after the collision, a short white male with white or grey hair exited the car and sprinted southbound on Mount Prospect towards 2nd Avenue.

Police said the incident remains under investigation.
