UPDATE: Newark Man Shot Dead, Another Injured in South 17th Street Ambush Near School

A deadly shooting in Newark’s South Ward on Wednesday afternoon has left one man dead and another injured, and authorities are exploring a possible connection to an earlier incident involving armed suspects fleeing on a dirt bike.

According to information released by the Newark Police Department, the shooting occurred around 4:00 p.m. in the area of 858 South 17th Street. 

 

When officers arrived, they found a Black male suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. 

 

He was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m. 

 

A second man was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound to the arm. 

 

He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

 

Sources familiar with the case told RLS Media that the shooter fled on a dirt bike after opening fire on the victims in Newark’s South Ward, causing students from a nearby school to scramble for cover.

 

The fatal shooting remains under active investigation, and no arrests have been announced.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as detectives work to determine the motive and identify those responsible.
