UPDATE: Newark Man Charged with Murder of Hillside Man

An Essex County man has been arrested and charged with being responsible for the fatal shooting that took place in Hillside last weekend.

Authorities have charged Jevon Pittman, 24, of Newark, with murder and related weapons offenses in connection with the death of 29-year-old Kevinray Hall of Hillside.

According to police, at approximately 9 p.m. on Dec. 2nd, members of the Union County Homicide Task Force responded to the 100 block of Summer Avenue in Hillside on a report of a shooting to find Hall suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at the scene. He was transported to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in critical condition for emergency treatment and pronounced dead there at approximately 11:40 p.m.

A joint investigation by the Homicide Task Force, Hillside Police Department, and Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit resulted in Pittman being identified as a suspect.

Police placed Pittman into custody without incident on Warren Street in Newark shortly after 4 p.m. on Dec. 6th with members of the Hillside and Newark police departments assisting Prosecutor’s Office detectives in making the arrest.

A judge ordered Pittman to be lodged at the Union County Jail pending a first appearance in Superior Court.

Convictions on murder charges are commonly punishable by terms of 30 years to life in state prison.

These criminal charges are mere accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
