UPDATE: Newark Central Ward Gunfire Kills Man

Newark

Essex County authorities are looking into a shooting that left a man dead on a street in Newark's Central Ward on Monday night.

Police in Newark are attempting to determine if the fatal shooting is connected to a bloody street fight that occurred just after gunfire rang out in the 300 block of West Kinney Street just before 6:55 p.m.

According to a statement released by police, a ShotSpotter activation alerted police of about a dozen gunshots on West Kinney Street, where arriving officers taped off the area after finding the lifeless body of Mr. Avent Holston, 27, of Newark.

Police say while investigating the shooting, they were alerted of a 'brawl' between several individuals near the Mercer Street side of Arts High School, where they found heavy traces of blood in the area.

Authorities have not immediately connected the two incidents but are actively on the search for a vehicle grey vehicle -possibly a Mercedes Benz- that was observed speeding from the scene of the shooting.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation and no arrests have been reported according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
