UPDATE Motorcyclist Killed in Totowa Crash Was Traveling in Wrong Direction, Police

There is an active investigation underway into a crash that left a male motorcyclist dead early this morning in Totowa according to a spokesperson for the NJ State Police.

According to the spokesperson, at around 2:51 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Route 80 in Totowa, troopers from the NJ State police observed a black Suzuki motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed on the highway and began to follow the motorcycle when the rider sped off, prompting officer to discontinue following.

Several minutes later, police were informed that a crash that involved a motorcycle had occurred on the highway the spokesperson said.

Emergency responders were called to the scene where they found male victim unconscious and unresponsive on the highway after striking a black Honda Accord driven by an unidentified male.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the vehicle was observed by EMS at the scene after his airbag activated but did not suffer serious injuries the spokesperson said.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes at a high rate of speed before he collided with the Honda Accord.

The incident remains under investigation the spokesperson said.
