A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash on Interstate 78 in Somerset County Sunday afternoon, prompting the temporary closure of both directions of the highway.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:26 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of I-78 near mile marker 28.1 in Bedminster.
According to initial information, the motorcyclist struck the rear of a vehicle and was ejected from the motorcycle.
Due to the severity of the injuries, a NorthSTAR medical helicopter was requested to land on the highway.
Emergency responders, including the New Jersey State Police and local fire departments, temporarily shut down both directions of Interstate 78 to allow the helicopter to safely land and transport the injured rider.
The victim was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment. The extent of the rider’s injuries has not been released.
The crash remains under investigation by the New Jersey State Police.
