UPDATE: Monday Evening Violence Leaves Five Shot, One Dead in Newark

Newark

An evening of violence that began at around rush hours on Monday extended into the evening leaving five people suffering gunshot wounds, with one of the victims fatally succumbing in Newark.

According to authorities, the shooting activity began near a bodega at the intersection of Irvine Turner Boulevard and 18th Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. sending police to the scene where officers found that a gunman fired off nearly a dozen rounds from a gun at that location.

Officials at University Hospital notified officers canvassing the site for victims that a male arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle suffering a gunshot wound.

According to Newark Police, the victim is a 19-year-old man in stable condition. Back at the crime scene, police marked off shell casings as detectives continued to investigate a motive for the shooting.

At approximately the same time as the Irvine Turner Boulevard shooting, our staff learned of a person that suffered a gunshot wound and was receiving treated at the Clara Maass Medical Center.

The victim told Newark Police officials -who were attempting to determine the where he suffered his injuries- that while walking in the 70's block of Gould Avenue, several male suspects tried to rob him of personal possessions then fired at least one shot at him.

Authorities said the victim's injuries were considered non-life threatening. Police searched the area for a crime scene, but it is not immediately clear if they ever found one.

Police in Newark's West Ward scrambled to the site of a shooting that occurred in the area of 20th Street and 18th Avenue after reports of shots fired rang out in the area after 7:30 p.m.

First arriving units urgently requested EMS after finding a critically injured male at that location. The victim was rushed to University Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead a short time later.

A police search of the area had officers locate a male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the arm and a third victim suffering a non-life threatening bullet wound to the leg.

The motive for all of the shootings remain under investigation.

There were no arrests immediately reported.
