UPDATE: Man Wanted for Newark Shooting Captured While Awaiting Sentencing in Union County Court House

A man who was wanted for a Newark South Ward Shooting was arrested while being sentenced for a separate crime in a Union County Court House

Police said Quadir Whitehead was being sought by members of the Department’s Cease-Fire Shooting Response Team for shooting at someone in the 100 block of Shepard Avenue on May 30th.

Shooting team members quickly identified Whitehead as the gunman and then enlisted the assistance of the Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Team to locate him authorities said.

Detectives were searching locations frequented by Whitehead when, after receiving a tip, they located Whitehead in the Union County Court House where he was being sentenced to five years in jail on an unrelated charge cops said.

He now faces additional time having been charged by the Newark detectives with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose for the May 30th incident and is also a suspect in other continuing investigations.

Authorities said Whitehead’s target was not injured during the incident.
