UPDATE: Man Shot Inside Newark South Ward Park Dies

Newark

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into a shooting that killed a man inside a park in Newark's South Ward Friday evening.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 6:12 p.m., a ShotSpotter device activated in the 500 block of Clinton Avenue notifying police of several rounds of gunfire in the area.

When police arrived, they checked the Mildred Helms Park, located just off of Clinton Avenue, in the 50's block of Hedden Terrace, where they found a man suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say the severely injured and unresponsive victim was rushed to University Hospital, where he died a short time later.

The suspects fled from the park and remained at large.

Police say there were no other injuries reported.
