Police and Essex County Prosecutor’s Office detectives are investigating a domestic shooting incident that resulted in a person killed Saturday night.

The late-night violent encounter happened around 11:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Shephard Avenue in the Weequahic section of Newark.

Officers rushed to the scene to investigate reports of shots fired and when they arrived, police found two males suffering gunshot wounds and a woman who was injured but not shot, according to the preliminary investigation.

Both unidentified males were rushed to University Hospital with the alleged boyfriend pronounced dead according to county officials

Several residents on Shephard Avenue told RLS Media that the drama unfolded when the woman's husband returned to his home from a day with his two children.

Residents say the husband (suspect) engaged in a dispute with a man they said was the wife’s boyfriend. During the encounter, the husband reportedly pulled a weapon and shot the victim.

The husband began to assault his wife before shooting himself in the head, residents on Shephard Avenue told RLS Media.

“He lived in the house with his wife,”residents said.

The extent of his condition was not confirmed as of 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to residents, the suspect was a great community man who loved his two children and worked hard to support his wife and family.

“This was definitely out of his character and he must have flipped out. We saw him sitting in his car for a long time last night which was not normal for him as well”, residents said.

At 6:16 a.m. today, The Essex County Proseecutor’s Office confirmed with RLS Media that one person was fatally shot but did not immediately release the motive for the shooting.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has launched and active and ongoing investigation.
