UPDATE: Man Killed, Newark Deputy Mayor’s Son Injured in Shooting

Authorities in Essex County reported that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police, is investigating the fatal shooting of Mr. Nadir Key, 29, of Newark.

According to officials, on Friday, August 19, at 11:29 p.m., police were notified of an alleged shooting incident on the 200 block of Orange Street, Newark. 

Upon arrival, police found Key suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

He was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:54 a.m.  

A second victim, only reported as the son of Newark Deputy Mayor Rahaman Muhammad, suffered a non-fatal graze wound to his forehead. 

Fatal shooting

He was transported to the hospital, where he is expected to recover. 

The investigation is active and ongoing. It is not clear if the pair were the targets of the shooting. 

No arrests have been made.

UPDATE: RLS Media is learning the victim’s last name is Key. ECPO statement released the last name as King.
